Web hosting or VPS: what does your business website need?

Describe the workload first

List what runs on the website: company information, an online shop, a booking application or an internal service. Record used storage, database size, software versions and busy periods. Visitor counts alone do not describe server demand. A page served from cache and a complex product search can use very different amounts of resources.

Ask the current administrator for CPU, memory, response-time and error measurements during a busy period. If measurements are unavailable, agree on an observation period before choosing resources. Keep the baseline so that you can compare the same operations after migration.

When web hosting is a practical fit

Web hosting can be a useful starting point for a business website that works with the available PHP and database versions and does not need custom operating-system services. Check the limits of the actual plan, its backup arrangements and how support requests are handled.

For WordPress, compare the environment with the current official requirements and check theme and plugin compatibility. A larger plan does not automatically fix an expensive plugin, slow database queries or oversized images. Those issues need attention inside the application as well.

When a VPS becomes useful

A VPS may suit an application that needs a different runtime, custom services, specific network rules or more control over its configuration. The choice is more useful when these requirements are documented and somebody is responsible for maintaining the environment.

Ask how resources are allocated, what expansion involves and how much headroom is available during peaks. A VPS label alone does not establish that CPU capacity is dedicated or that your application will become faster. Review the service terms and compare measurements from your own workload.

Compare the complete service scope

Include operating-system management, updates, security configuration, backups, restoration and migration in the comparison. Identify who supports the application code. An operating-system issue and a plugin defect may require different specialists, even when both appear as a slow or unavailable website.

• Who installs and verifies updates?
• Which data is backed up and how long is it retained?
• How do you request support, and what does the service agreement cover?
• Who checks forms, logins and orders after migration?
